More info on Viking Glass:
"Viking Glass grew out of its predecessor, New Martinsville Glass Company, which was established in 1900 by Mark Johnson and George Matheny. The plant was up and running in 1901 in New Martinsville, West Virginia, known for its natural gas and access to transportation by rail and by river – the Ohio river. The company quickly became known as a manufacturer of American decorative glass products, and for its use of color – something Viking championed until it closed its doors in 1984.

New Martinsville Glass had a bit of a rocky start. In 1907, the factory was destroyed by fire and flood, but rebuilt and reopened by October that same year. During the 1913 flood, the Company suffered some “minor losses relative to the manufacturing of glass” (Paint, Oil, and Chemical Review, vol. 55, circa 1913). Then, with the rebuilding of its glass factory, New Martinsville Glass moved into full-scale production of pressed glassware, and then quickly expanded into vanities, barware, lamps, inkwells, and crystal figurines, among other decorative glass objects.
The New Martinsville Glass Co. went bankrupt during the depression in the late 1930s, but given its location being close to the resources needed to create quality glass, investors with the Silver Glass Company of Meriden, Connecticut purchased the company in 1938.

Mid-Century, Here Comes Viking!
Around 1940, the company redirected to concentrate on modernization and hand-made quality glassware which the company called “Swedish Type”. The new style was popular for many years and was produced by nearly all glass makers in the world. Today the decorative style is called Swedish Modern.

The factory was renamed Viking Glass Co. to reflect the modern attitude in the early 1940’s. Viking produced modern, colorful, hand-made glass for every function and was successful for the next 40 years. Although Viking produced very little crackle glass overall, the Viking crackle fairy light was a real gem and scarcely seen today. In 1986 the company’s name was changed to Dalzell-Viking (due to the popular Scandinavian glass that was encroaching on the market), with crystal glass dominating its production during the war years. The Company launched a full-scale ad campaign promoting its patriotism with ads that boasted “Handmade in America” and “For use in American Homes.” Viking did not copy its competition’s styles as readily as the others did, and Viking products are usually easily recognizable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

Most vintage and antique glassware should be hand washed only and not in the dishwasher; especially any pieces with graphics or colourful patterns, for example Pyrex, Fire King, Glasbake, Corelle, drinkware, etc. Dishwashers can dull the finish on these unique pieces and cause premature wear to the surface and patterns or cause what is known as DWD or Dishwasher Damage which is irreversible. It's always better to be safe and wash by hand if you can.

Add some dish washing liquid into a sink or basin and add warm water. Placing a towel underneath can help to avoid breakage. It is best to use a damp cloth for any pieces with hand-painted decorations to preserve the art as even regular hand-washing can degrade these over time.

Does your store offer local pick-ups?

Absolutely! If you would like to coordinate a local pick-up in Durham Region you may either purchase the items and send a note after the fact to request a pick-up and we will then refund your shipping costs; or you can send a message prior to the order to request the local pick-up and we can remove the shipping costs on the items you wish to purchase. Ordering the items immediately will guarantee availability; this is the ideal method to ensure your selection(s) are not purchased by someone else in the interim, in case we do not respond to your inquiry soon enough (we will respond within 24 hours; however, we may not be available at the exact moment of your message)
