20th century history of ARC France:
"The glassworks initially established itself as one of the industrial jewels of Northern France before, over the years, becoming an international group and world leader in tableware.[4] Development began in earnest after the First World War in 1927, when Georges Durand's second son, Jacques, joined the company.[5]

In 1930, Jacques Durand went to the United States to study American glassworks, which were already equipped with tank furnaces and automatic machines. He decided to develop new manufacturing techniques and gradually equipped the company with new machines which allowed for improved production while preserving the creativity of glassmaking. The first tank furnace was constructed and the first presses were installed in 1934.[6]

After the Second World War, the Verrerie Cristallerie d’Arques continued its industrial expansion under the leadership of Jacques Durand, who was the sole co-owner of the company with his father in 1946. Jacques Durand benefited from the low interests rates for loans under the Marshall Plan to finish equipping the factory with the latest machines designed in the United States.[7] In 1950, the glassworks, which had unique equipment in Europe,[7] produced 15,000 tonnes of glass per year with a workforce of 993 people.

By the 1960s, the company had mastered the process of manufacturing stemware and launched the “Ballon” glass, the first stemware automatically produced, and other finer glassware products. One of Arc's signature products is the thick-walled ten-sided "working glasses" that were a workhorse in French kitchens after their introduction in 1978.[8]"

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

Most vintage and antique glassware should be hand washed only and not in the dishwasher; especially any pieces with graphics or colourful patterns, for example Pyrex, Fire King, Glasbake, Corelle, drinkware, etc. Dishwashers can dull the finish on these unique pieces and cause premature wear to the surface and patterns or cause what is known as DWD or Dishwasher Damage which is irreversible. It's always better to be safe and wash by hand if you can.

Add some dish washing liquid into a sink or basin and add warm water. Placing a towel underneath can help to avoid breakage. It is best to use a damp cloth for any pieces with hand-painted decorations to preserve the art as even regular hand-washing can degrade these over time.

Does your store offer local pick-ups?

Absolutely! If you would like to coordinate a local pick-up in Durham Region you may either purchase the items and send a note after the fact to request a pick-up and we will then refund your shipping costs; or you can send a message prior to the order to request the local pick-up and we can remove the shipping costs on the items you wish to purchase. Ordering the items immediately will guarantee availability; this is the ideal method to ensure your selection(s) are not purchased by someone else in the interim, in case we do not respond to your inquiry soon enough (we will respond within 24 hours; however, we may not be available at the exact moment of your message)
